Bialowieza National Park is the National Park situated in the north-east part of Poland, in Podlaskie Voivodeship. The total area of the park is 152.2 square kilometres . It is known for the protection of the best preserved fragment of the Bialowieza Forest, part of Europe's last primary forest, but most of all it is famous for the world's largest population of European Bison - Żubr. Bialowieza National Park, in 1979 was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Bison is the symbol of the Park. They extinct almost completely in the eighteenth century. Their populations survived only in the Caucasus and in the Bialowieza Forest. Currently, in the Bialowieza Forest live about 950 bison from the 4500 bisons all over the world.
