Pieniny - is the largest and most beautiful mountain range, which stretches over a length of more then 500 km from Bratislava through Moravia, along the southern slopes of the Western Beskid Mountains to Marmaroszy in Romania. On the border between Polish and Slovak limestone rocks have been pushed out of the usual Carpathian flysch rocks. It happened in a place where much earlier Dunajec river meandered. Current Pieniny grew up among the gentle hills separating Podhale from Spisz and Beskid Sadecki. The river remained in the same place, which millions years ago and eroding rocks, created a narrow, very winding and picturesque gorge.
The most spectacular part of Pieniny is protected in a cross-border Pieninski National Park. The most important peaks are Trzy Korony (the Three Crowns )(982 m n p m). The famous peaks with stunning views are: Sokolica (747 m) and Czertezik (774 m) that rise to approx. 300 m above the surface of the Dunajec river. Most of the tourists watch these peaks during the Dunajec River Rafting.
Hiking trails in Pieniny, due to the height difference for short distances, can be difficult and in the cold and wet season can be dangerous. In the Polish part of Pieniny, there are numerous view terraces of the canyon of the Dunajec River. At the foot of the Pieniny, it is also worth seeing The Royal Castle in Czorsztyn, Horvath Castle in Niedzica, as well as Kroscienko nad Dunajcem and Szczawnica - health resorts with plentiful mineral springs and good treatment base.
